For years I have been reading fantasy books by authors such as R.A. Salvatore, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and Terry Brooks.  These stories have captivated my attention and transported me to another world where I have partaken in quests to save the world.  This genre of storytelling has been food for my soul for most of my life, but these past six months have really had me in a state where I wasn’t interested in reading anymore.

I needed a change.

Speaking to some of my friends about the books they read, I leaned about Laken Cane, an author of urban fantasy books.  I had no idea what to expect, but the idea of urban fantasy intrigued me – instead of being based in a purely fictional world, this genre of fantasy storytelling is rooted in the real world and is primarily set in a city.

I decided to give it a read.

I started reading Shiv Crew, the first book in the Rune Alexander series.  I didn’t know what to expect, but after a few pages, I knew that I had found a new author to follow.  It was exactly what I had been looking for with characters I fell in love with, and a writing style that I enjoyed.  In my hand was a piece of literary art, and I couldn’t contain the smile on my face.

I stayed up all night reading.

While I only have a few more pages to turn before this book is done, I am excited to pick up the next one.  With eight books already written and another in progress, I know that I will  be enjoying the works of Laken Cane for weeks to come.
